Mountain expeditions - Llullaillaco 9 days
Volcán Llullaillaco 6.739 m.s.n.m. (Latitud: 24° 43' 0'' S I.- Description: Vº Llullaillaco is located at the border with Argentina, next to Mina Escondida and in the National Park Llullaillaco. In spite of it is one of the highest mountains in Chile, it has very few visitors. The reasons are the high difficulty to get there and the mines that can explode if you loose the route, It is a very classical volcano of the “Puna de Atacama”: Rocky climbings, very cold weather, ash, snow and little glaciers in the route. Llullaillaco, means in aymara languaje "hot water";lloclla (hot) y yacu (water). II.- Climbing Program Day 1.- We meet your expedition before 14.00 in Antofagasta (2nd Region in Chile, 1.370 kmts. North of Santiago) at the airport, bus station or hotel and immediately start in our vehicles to Mina Escondida; 180 kmts of good road, but after that a not so good International road to Paso Socompa and after that a very bad road up to a place at 3.000 m. (517340; 7295821). Here we will have an impressive sightof the volcano. There we will camp and we will have a short acclimatization trekking of one hour by good road. At 20.00 we will have dinner, to sleep afterwards. Day 2.- Breakfast at 08.30. After that we will pick up our camp and at 10.00 we will start in our vehicle to Refugio CONAF Quebrada Zorritas in National Park Llullaillaco. This hut is located at4.170 m. .( 541789; 7276905 ), it will be our sleeping place during 2 nights. There is a water stream there . CONAF Hut is a comfortable place to stay. We will have lunch at 13.00. At 15.00 we will have a short acclimatization trekking by good road. Dinner at 20.00 and sleeping there afterwards. Day 3.- Breakfast at 08.00 and resting time. About 15.00 we will have lunch and after that a trekking of 3 hours to know the place of Camp One. The way is not so hard (4 WD road). We will come back and we will have dinner at 20.00. Sleeping there at 21.00 Day 4.- Breakfast at 08.30; picking up our camp and then we will start to Camp One in our vehicle. This Camp is at 4.600 m. (542500; 7271260). This trip takes about one hour in our vehicle. There we will set our camp, have our lunch at 14.00 and during afternoon we will have to prepare our equipments for the next days. The vehicle remains here, so we will have to carry all our equipment, food, water and tents. Dinner at 20.00 and sleeping at 22.00. Day 5.- Breakfast at 08.00 and starting to High Camp. This walking is hard; takes among 4 to 5 hours by a gorge that runs West-East. At 5.600 m. (545751; 7268357). There we will have a little water stream and we will set our camp there and will have lunch afterwards. Dinner at 19.00 and before sleeping we will have to prepare our equipment for tomorrow, that will be our SUMMIT DAY. The place is very rocky and windy, so you will need your very warm clothes (Goretex, Polar) and plastic shoes, sticks, sun protection creams and hat. Marching food and 2 water litters supplied by our company. Day 6.- Breakfast at 05.00 and beginning our ATTEMPT TO THE SUMMIT by the border of the glacier. This walking takes about 8 hours to the summit. It’s a very steep way (about 45º to 50º in some parts) and with rocks of about 50 cmts of diameter. When arriving to the summit you can see the rest of Inca’s buildings sited in the argentinian summit. You can also see the Salares (salt lakes) of Atacama, Punta Negra, Aguas Calientes, Arizaro (Argentina), Mina Escondida and the volcanoes San Pedro, San Pablo, Licancabur, Pili Lascar, Socompa, Lastarria, among others. We will go back to our High Camp about 19.00 and dinner at 20.00. In this place night temperatures can get to -20ºC - -25ºC. Day 7.- Breakfast in the morning and after that, starting to Camp One, where we left the vehicle, this walking takes about 3 – 4 hours. There we will rest a little and then we will continue in the vehicle up to Refugio CONAF, there we will have lunch about 15.00; in the afternoon we will rest to have dinner at 20.00 and to sleep at 22.00. Day 8.- Extra Day. In case of bad weather, we can use this day to attempt the summit again. Day 9.- Brakfast at 08.00 and then starting in our vehicle to Antofagasta. During the way we will have a snack to get to the city about 15.00. End of our services. III.- Personal Equipment needed: •Matress. •Back pack of 80 lts. •Travel Bag for no more than 80 lts. For your personal equipment. •Personal cleanliness elements (toothbrush, soap, towel, comb, etc.). •Sleeping bag for below -25ºC. •Insurance for personal accidents, equipment loosing, sicknesses, hospital emergencies, extra or incidental expenses, (“Seguro de vida en viaje”), (These insurances are not sold in Chile to people without residence). •Extra clothes for travelling days. For the “Summit Day”: •1st, 2nd and 3rd layers, ideal feather anorak for -30ºC. •Gloves 3 layers (insulation, warming and wind stopper). •Plastic shoes. •Crampons. •Termic Bottle (“Thermo”) for unless one liter. •Sticks or marching axe. For acclimatization hikes: •1st and 2nd layers, optional 3rd coat. •Trekking shoes. •Resting (or “refuge”) shoes. •Solar protectión , hat, sun creams, UV lenses. •Sticks or axe. IV.- Equipment supplied by Aventurismo expediciones: •Camp common equipment: Tables, chairs, dishes, silverware (knife, spoon, fork, tea spoon), glasses for hot and cold drinks, lamps, dinning tent for 8 to 10 people. •First Aid box, movil oxigen equipment. •2 Radios HF (to comunícate withcamps), by every 4 climbers. •Mountain tents for 2 people , with “duroaluminium” sticks, model Ferrino Stardust, Lafuma Camp2, The North Face VE-25 or similar. •During camps with vehicle, we use stoves with butangas of 5 kgs. •During high altitude camps we use small butano-propano stoves 80/20 or 70/30. •4 WD vehicles 2000 or newer for 4 climbers each. If necessary, we use without 4WD Vans for approaching trips. •We provide 1 Mountain Guide with experience in the zone by every 4 climbers and camp assistants and conductors or cookers when necessary for more than 4 climbers expeditions. Food: Aventurismo expediciones provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and summit food during our expeditions. Breakfast:: Coffee or tea, oak, cornflakes, long life bread, marmalade, low cream milk, butter, jam, cheese, eggs 2 times during the expe. Lunch and dinner: spagehtti, soups, rice, cow meat, chicken meat, fresh salads the first days, Canned goods the next days, canned green salads (summit days), canned fish , etc, milk desserts , fresh fruits when possible and then canned fruits. Chilean Wines, coffee , tea or herb water. Summit food:Chocolates, candies, dryed fruits, peanuts, raisins, almond, isotonic juices, water. Water: We recommend to drink unless 3 liters a day by each climber. We supply all the water necessary. Emergency food: We supply extra food for 3 more days appart from that of the expedition program.
